Will You Have Tooth Stains after Your Braces Have Been Removed?
There are a lot of misconceptions about braces, particularly metal braces. Some of these misconceptions are rooted in truths that have simply been exaggerated over time while others are myths that have become inflated into horror stories. The truth is that traditional metal braces are extremely effective and safe, especially when treatment is administered and supervised by an orthodontist with the skill and experience of Dr. Kellyn W. Hodges. Even then, however, patients have the responsibility of following her instructions to the letter and participating actively in their own orthodontic care if they want to achieve the best possible results as quickly as possible.
One of the most common misconceptions about traditional metal braces is that they cause the teeth to become stained. The truth is that no orthodontic appliance, including metal braces, cause tooth discoloration. However, patients must be careful to clean their teeth properly, avoid certain foods and liquids, and follow instructions provided to them by Dr. Hodges in order to avoid tooth stains once their braces are removed. As long as they do their due diligence as patients, they can count on Dr. Hodges to guide them toward a mouth full of healthy, beautiful teeth.
During consultations between Dr. Hodges and her patients at her office in Philadelphia, tooth stains after braces - and how they can be avoided - are discussed in detail.
White Spots
Some patients develop white spots on their teeth while they are wearing braces. These spots result from acid eating away at the enamel of the teeth, causing visible decalcification. The decalcification spots basically indicate where cavities are beginning to form. Such spots develop over time due to poor oral hygiene, which allows plaque to build up between the wire and gums and between the wires of braces.
Fortunately, Dr. Hodges’ patients do not have to worry about white spots forming on their teeth. As long as they attend their appointments regularly and follow her instructions closely, she will nip any potential oral health problems in the bud before they have a chance to develop into something more serious.
Food Stains
Some superficial staining of the teeth may occur while you are wearing braces; however, as long as you care for your teeth as instructed, this staining will easily be polished away as part of the process of smoothing your teeth down after the removal of your braces. While you are wearing braces, Dr. Hodges will advise you of foods and substances to avoid, such as:
- Tobacco (this is an absolute must if you wish to achieve optimal oral health!)
- Wine (if you are of age)
- Black tea (drink green tea if you must)
- Citrus juices
- Sports drinks (e.g., Gatorade)
- Dark berries
- Sweets, especially those with artificial dyes
As long as you brush, rinse, and clean your gums daily as instructed by Dr. Hodges, your teeth will look great once your braces come off.
