Invisalign and Age By Kellyn Hodges on July 10, 2020

Our team at Kellyn Hodges Orthodontics offers this revolutionary treatment for patients who want to enhance their smile and improve their oral health.

Many of our Philadelphia, PA patients often want to know if Invisalign is appropriate for all ages. In this article, we will explore Invisalign and age, and discuss whether or not clear aligner therapy is appropriate for everyone.

Can You be too Young for Invisalign?

Invisalign is not appropriate for very young children. In the past, this treatment was only recommended for teens and adults. However, there are some cases in which Invisalign may be used as Phase I orthodontic treatment for kids between the ages of six and 11.

Invisalign can help create room for permanent teeth by holding space in the jaws. Phase I treatment can effectively prevent bite issues and reduce the need for more invasive treatment later on.

Can You be too Old for Invisalign?

You cannot be too old to enjoy the benefits of Invisalign. In fact, many of our Bala Cynwyd, PA orthodontic patients are adults – many of them in their 60s and 70s.

As long as you are free from serious oral health problems, like decay and gum disease, you can be considered for Invisalign treatment. During a consultation at our practice, we can help you determine if Invisalign can play a role in helping you achieve your cosmetic and oral health goals.

Invisalign for Teens

Clear aligner therapy is incredibly popular among our younger patients. Teens want a discreet option. They typically want to avoid wearing metal braces if at all possible.

In the right cases, Invisalign is incredibly effective for patients in this age range. Since their jaws are not quite fully grown, the teeth move easier. As a general rule, teens should already have most of their permanent teeth before undergoing this type of treatment.

Patient compliance is one of the most important aspects of Invisalign treatment. This can be challenging for some teens. The trays must be worn at least 22 hours every day to be effective. If your teen does not do this, the desired results will not be achieved. For this reason, Invisalign offers specialized trays for young patients. These aligners have blue indicator dots to tell parents if they are being worn enough.

Invisalign for Adults

Our adult patients choose Invisalign time and time again due to the undeniable benefits. Since the trays are removable, patients can still eat all of their favorite foods. You can also brush and floss normally.

Invisalign addresses most of the same issues as traditional braces. And in most cases, treatment can be completed in about 18 to 24 months.
