Dental Crowns

Damaged, decaying, or missing teeth can take a toll on your self-esteem, cause pain, and make it difficult to chew and speak properly. Fortunately, the damaged part of your tooth can be removed and a dental crown can be placed to restore its shape and functionality. Treat your tooth and discuss your restorative options with Dr. Kellyn Hodges and her team in the Philadelphia, PA, area.

What Types of Issues Can Dental Crowns Address?

Dental crowns are used to strengthen and protect teeth that have been damaged while restoring the appearance of your smile. These restorations cover the entire visible portion of a tooth and are custom-crafted to blend with the shape and color of surrounding teeth. There are several reasons we might recommend a crown:

  • Repair tooth decay or damage that can't be treated with a filling, inlay, or onlay
  • Protect the remaining tissue following root canal therapy
  • Cover flaws like stains or unevenly sized teeth that can't be treated with teeth whitening or dental bonding
  • Replace a missing tooth with a dental implant
  • Restore worn chewing surfaces
  • Fix bite misalignment

I love the progress of my teeth and how professional the staff are. Every visit I’ve had has been a great experience but the most recent visit stood out. I had the pleasure of meeting Lin and I literally felt like I was in such great hands from the moment I sat in the chair. She is very experienced and took the time to educate me on everything I needed to know. She is also so kind, patient, and knowledgeable and on top of that she has such good energy. I just wanted to write this review to make sure it is known how much people like her are appreciated and how far being kind goes.

Why Are Dental Crowns Necessary?

Dental crowns are a kind of dentistry that restores the balance and symmetry of your smile after treatment for cavities or trauma. This treatment can also alleviate discomfort, improve your ability to chew comfortably, allow you to speak more clearly, and help maintain the alignment of your teeth.

Leaving a damaged tooth untreated can take a toll on your oral health and cause further decay that may require a root canal to fix. In some cases, you might even need an extraction. Additionally, untreated infection can spread to other teeth and require expensive dentistry.

The Crown Placement Process

Before we can cement your crown in place, you'll have to schedule an initial consultation at one of our three conveniently located dental offices in the greater Philadelphia, PA, area. During the appointment, Dr. Hodges or a dentist from our team will evaluate your oral health to determine what type of treatment best suits your needs.

Once any underlying conditions are treated, we can begin your dental procedure:

You may receive a temporary crown while your permanent crown is being crafted.

Anesthesia

First, your dentist will administer local anesthesia to ensure your comfort.

Reshape

Your tooth will then need to be prepared for crown placement. This involves removing any compromised tissue and reshaping the tooth to accommodate the crown.

Impressions

Once your tooth is prepared, your dentist will take a series of impressions. Before you leave the office, you may need a temporary crown to protect your tooth.

Lab

Your impressions will then be sent to a lab to guide fabrication. It typically takes about two weeks for your crown to be made.

Placement

At a follow-up appointment, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and place your finished crown over the tooth. Your dentist will then ensure it does not disrupt your bite or the appearance of your smile and make any necessary adjustments.

Dental Cement

If no modifications are needed, the crown is bonded in place with dental cement.

You may experience some sensitivity after your dental procedure, but this usually resolves in a few days.

Implant-Supported Dental Crowns

If you are missing a tooth, we recommend a dental implant because they're the only kind of restoration that can prevent your jaw from atrophying, a common problem following tooth loss. Dental implants are also a worthwhile investment because they can last a lifetime.

Over time, missing teeth can cause your other teeth to move out of place and become misaligned. This can require orthodontics to fix, even if you've previously had them. An implant-supported crown can keep your teeth from becoming misaligned and prevent the need for orthodontics.

At Kellyn Hodges Orthodontics, which serves the Philadelphia, PA, area, we coordinate with trusted oral surgeons for dental implant surgery. Once you've healed from your dental implant procedure, you can return to our office, and we can have you fitted for a crown.

How to Maintain Your Restoration

There are a few things you can do to make your crown last as long as possible:

  • Maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine (brushing twice a day and flossing once a day)
  • Attend biannual cleanings and examinations (our staff can recommend the best oral care products and techniques to protect your restoration)
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods that can damage your crown
  • Wear a dental mouth guard if you grind your teeth at night or play contact sports
  • Be mindful of your habits (biting fingernails and chewing ice can lead to damage)

With proper care, dental crowns can last 10 years or more.

The Benefits of a Porcelain Dental Crown

Dental restorations can be made out of a variety of materials like porcelain, ceramic, metals, and resin, all of which offer different benefits.

Porcelain is a popular choice for dental work, especially for the front teeth. Dental porcelain is virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth because the material can be matched with the color of each patient's natural teeth. The material is durable enough to result in long-lasting dentistry, so you may not need a replacement for about 15 years if you take care of your restoration.
