Dental Implants

Left untreated, even one missing tooth can allow surrounding teeth to shift, potentially undoing orthodontic treatment you have invested in. Dental implants can securely attach crowns, bridges, or dentures directly to your jawbone, filling the gap from missing teeth. Learn how Dr. Kellyn Hodges coordinates implant care with a team of oral surgeons in the Philadelphia, PA, area to keep patients smiling.

What Are Dental Implants?

At our orthodontic offices in Bala Cynwyd, Bensalem, and Montgomeryville, PA, we educate our patients about the incredible benefits of dental implants and restorative dentistry.

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots made from titanium that oral surgeons place directly into the jawbone. Over a period of several months, the implants fuse with the bone tissues and become a permanent part of your anatomy. Once they have fused to the bone, dental implants can support prosthetic teeth.

See How Dental Implants Work

Dental implants go through the gums and into the jawbone. Once they have fused with the bone, they can receive abutments (small connector pieces) and crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Why Do Orthodontists Recommend Dental Implants?

Orthodontists like Dr. Kellyn Hodges recommend patients restore lost teeth with dental implants as soon as possible. When a tooth is lost, the jawbone will begin to weaken and shrink at that site. As the jawbone shrinks, teeth can start to shift, undoing any progress made by braces or Invisalign®.

Traditional dentures and bridges don't do anything to prevent jawbone atrophy. Only dental implants provide the stimulation that natural tooth roots provide, which keeps the jawbone strong and healthy. That's why the team at Kellyn Hodges Orthodontics highly recommends patients with missing teeth consider implant dentistry.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Implant-supported restorations can provide patients with many benefits, including:

  • Improved chewing and speaking
  • Support to surrounding teeth
  • Natural-looking tooth replacement
  • Long-term results
  • Enhanced comfort
  • Support for your facial structures
  • Boost in self-confidence
  • Stimulation of the jawbone

While traditional restorations may provide some of these features, they can't match all the advantages of dental implants. The comprehensive benefits of dental implants cannot be overstated.

Dental Implant Candidacy Factors

Most adults with missing teeth are good candidates for dental implants. Some factors we'll evaluate when determining your candidacy for this form of dentistry include:

Bone Density

Once natural teeth are lost, the jawbone begins to atrophy. Over time, the bone will eventually become too weak to support implants. If your jawbone doesn't have enough tissue to receive implants, your candidacy can be restored through a dental bone grafting procedure.

Oral Health

Patients must be in relatively good oral health before they can begin implant treatment. If you have gum disease or extensive tooth decay, we'll need to address these issues before your implant surgery. The team at Kellyn Hodges Orthodontics can treat most dental concerns.

Tobacco Use

If you smoke or use chewing tobacco, you should quit before beginning implant treatment. Smoking leads to a number of dental issues and can impair your jawbone's ability to fuse with titanium implants. Quitting your tobacco habit will increase your chances of success with dental implants.

The Dental Implant Process What Patients Can Expect

Our team takes pride in providing patients with high-quality restorations that fit comfortably and look realistic.

Consultation

Your implant journey will begin with a free consultation at any of our Philadelphia-area offices. During this consultation, Dr. Hodges or one of our dentists will ask about your goals and perform an examination to determine your candidacy for implants. If you and our dental team agree to proceed with treatment, we will refer you to a trusted oral surgeon for your implant placement procedure.

Implant Surgery

During the implant placement surgery, the oral surgeon will create small incisions in your gums. Then, he or she will insert the titanium implants through your gums and into your jawbone. The incisions will then be closed with sutures.

Healing

Once the implants are in place, a healing period of three to six months will be required for the implants to fuse with the bone. This process is known as osseointegration. You may be provided with a temporary restoration during this time so that there is no visible gap in your smile.

Abutments

Once osseointegration is complete, you will be ready for another minor surgical procedure. During this procedure, the oral surgeon will incise the gums and attach abutments to your implants.

Restorations

A few weeks after you receive your abutments, you will return to our Philadelphia-area offices so we can begin designing your custom restoration. We will take impressions of your teeth and the abutments so that your crown, bridge, or denture will fit precisely in your mouth. It will take our dental lab a couple of weeks to create your restoration. Once it is ready, Dr. Hodges or one of our dentists can attach the restoration to your abutments and complete your smile.

Life With Dental Implants

At the conclusion of your implant treatment, you will have a complete, functional smile. Because your restoration will be directly attached to your jawbone, you should be able to bite into all of your favorite foods, and smile and speak with confidence.

Our team takes pride in providing Philadelphia-area patients with high-quality restorative solutions that fit comfortably and look completely realistic, so no one will be able to tell that your smile contains prosthetic teeth.

To ensure that your restoration lasts for as long as possible, care for it just like you'd care for your natural teeth. Brush and floss every day, and visit a dentist at least twice a year for a routine cleaning and check-up.
